The world after 2020 can be defined by many features. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, one dominant theme, though, rang through many lives. Loneliness. As people took shelter from the coronavirus inside their homes, they grew weary. In a world as interconnected as it is now, the sudden forced isolation came as a shock to many. After all, no one had experienced this quiet solitude since the days of landlines and snail-mail.

Yet, the internet continues to make life easier for everyone. With internet connections readily available through Spectrum internet and TV plans and the like, it’s possible to not ever be alone. Maybe you can’t go drinking or gaming with your friends on the weekends. Although, you can still share experiences with them, like watching movies and shows.

But how can you do that while being in totally different locations? Luckily, there are many ways you can watch videos together with online friends. Here are some of them.

Zoom, Skype, or Discord

These three are the easiest and most widely used apps for watching videos online. Using them is simple. First, have all of your friends join the call. Then, one person can share their screen while streaming any video online. Also, everyone can turn their cameras on as they watch. This way, you’ll see exactly how everyone is reacting to the video. Want to make it more fun? You can also record the call to forever cherish some fun memories. Moreover, you can even choose to play your videos individually without sharing screens. This way, you’ll avoid lags. Although, you’ll have to go the traditional “3…2…1…Play!” route. That is, you’ll need to manually sync your videos with each other.

This is another hit with long-distance friends. With Gaze, you can video whiling watching YouTube videos in sync with each other. Do you want to take a short break? Pause the video and it’ll pause for all your friends in the call. Moreover, you can even watch videos or movies stored on your computer in sync! The condition is, though, that every member in the call must have the same video file.

Houseparty is a fun little app that comes with an added twist. In addition to being able to video call friends and watch videos in sync, you and your friends can even play games! For example, you can play Heads Up! or Chips & Guac, right on the video call. With Houseparty, you can truly experience a house party with your friends—but online.

This is one of the most popular apps for watching videos together with friends. Previously called Netflix Party, this Google Chrome extension can now support multiple platforms. Using it is pretty easy. Simply download the Teleparty extension, and make sure your friends also do it. Then, once you’ve opened your streaming platform—be it Netflix, Hulu, or HBO— click on the Teleparty icon.

When you do this, a chat bar will pop up on the right side of your screen. Through this, you can chat with all your friends while watching videos in sync. Also, when one person pauses or fast-forwards a video, it will control everyone’s screens. However, you need to be careful of a couple of things with using Teleparty. Firstly, all your friends must be subscribing members of the streaming service. Also, you can skip ahead to further episodes of the show, but not move backward.

Hulu Watch Party

Hulu Watch Party, just like Teleparty allows you and your subscribed friends to watch Hulu movies and shows together in sync. It also comes with a nice chat bar on the left side of the screen. While this is a great way to watch Hulu videos together, you can’t use it for other streaming services.

This is another great Google Chrome extension you can use to watch videos together with your friends. For still, you and your friends need to install the extension and log in to your accounts. Then, you can head to any website where you want to watch a video.
