Christmas is just close to the mark and the most popular streaming services are giving away several new films to enjoy. However, when you’re overwhelmed by options, choosing which movies to stream becomes an entire task in itself.

We’re going to highlight the top new films on streaming that you can add to your list this weekend. Netflix has two new major films this week: Tyler Perry’s starring military thriller “The Six Triple Eight” and the Jason Schwartzman-directed comedy drama “Between the Temples.” On Max there’s Clint Eastwood’s gripping courtroom thriller “Juror No. 2,” while Disney Plus has an inspiring new documentary called “Blink.” The mainstay of the award season “Anora” also makes its streaming debut on video-on demand platforms.

Director Nathan Silver’s comedy drama “Between the Temples” sees Carol Kane and Jason Schwartzman create a unlikely May-December bond in the midst of grief and new beginnings. Schwartzman plays Ben an aspiring cantor who is grieving over the loss of his beloved wife. He’s also struggling with the loss of faith that’s resulted in his losing his voice.

After returning to his Jewish mothers after a brief encounter with his primary school music teacher Carla Kessler (Carol Kane) who’s always dreamed about having a bat mitzvah is the motivation he’s needed to leave. He is reluctantly accepted as an student and a unique bond develops between the unlikely couple when they collaborate.

‘Juror No. 2′ (Max)

The word is it is believed that “Juror No. 2” will be Clint Eastwood’s last film and what a memorable note to end on. Nicholas Hoult stars as Justin Kemp who is a recovering alcoholic and soon-to-be father who is on juries for a significant murder trial. He is struggling with his inner demons after it becomes apparent that it could be him who is the culprit.

The defendant on trial The defendant is James Sythe (Gabriel Basso) an 18-year-old man his lover (Francesca Eastwood) was found dead beneath the bridge following an alcohol-fueled fight in the bar. This is the same bar in which Justin fell off his sobriety track and struck what he thought was the deer in his car when he returned home the same night. The aggressive prosecutor (Toni Collette) will try to create a mockery of Sythe in a crucial election season, Justin is trying to persuade jurors that they’ve gotten the wrong person without disclosing his personal involvement.

‘The Six Triple Eight’ (Netflix)

The Tyler Perry World War II drama wasn’t on my list of bingo cards for 2024 However, there we are. The show features an ensemble cast which includes Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Dean Norris, and Oprah Winfrey, “The Six Triple Eight” is about the sole Black female battalion serving in the overseas war zone during the conflict.

The women faced a difficult task ahead of them to tackle a three-year mail backlog that had left 17 million mail pieces in the limbo. Although they were faced with a new nation, discrimination, and gruelling wartime conditions, these women gave optimism to the front line through providing a motivational boost to troops in a pivotal moment in the conflict.

‘Blink’ (Disney Plus)

This is the season to enjoy beautiful stories and there’s nothing as good then “Blink” on Disney Plus. The emotional new film from Edmund Stenson, Academy Award winner Daniel Roher, and National Geographic tells the story of a family who are eager to explore all of the beauty of the world that they possibly can, before the moment is too far.

‘Anora’ (PVOD)

Sean Baker’s “Anora” is one to be watched in the upcoming awards ceremony. The rom-com’s drama already was awarded the top Cannes Film Festival prize in May, making it the first American winner in the past 13 years. Mikey Madison is Ani an 23-year-old stripper and sex-worker located in Brooklyn who is in love with the client of Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn) who is the spoilt son of a rich Russian Oligarch.

After a wild wedding and romance Ani’s Cinderella story is about to unravel after Ivan’s parents find out about their wedding and demand that they annul the marriage in some cases, going as that they hire a gang of thugs to frighten the couple. “Anora” has earned an amazing 96% score from critics at the Rotten Tomatoes website. Vanity Fair called the film the film a “vastly entertaining and finely acted film” while Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge described the film as an “whirlwind sex-work romance” that “sparkles like the tinsel in its leading lady’s hair.”

‘Cuckoo’ (Hulu)

The film was written and directed by Tilman Singer, “Cuckoo” stars Hunter Schafe as a 17-year-old American known as Gretchen who is reluctantly moved to the United States to stay with her father, who lives in the German Alps following her mother’s passes away. Although she’s not happy to be part of her father’s newly formed familial unit, she won’t have a lot of other options.

Finding it difficult to adjust to her new surroundings and being wary of the proximity her father’s boss, Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) is to her half-sister who is mute, Gretchen begins to be terrified by bloody images and strange sounds. Gretchen teams up with an investigator (Jan Bluthardt) to find the root of a sinister family secret that can shake Gretchen’s life.

‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ (2021)

“Judas and the Black Messiah” was the most popular film at”Judas and the Black Messiah” at Oscars in 2021. receiving 5 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and two Best Supporting Actor nominations. Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out,” “Nope”) taking home an Oscar for his performance as the civil rights activist Fred Hampton.

The film, which stars Kaluuya for Hampton and LaKeith Stanfield playing Bill O’Neal (also a nominee) is a true tale of the FBI’s encroachment into the Black Panther Party of Illinois and culminated in Hampton’s murder during a raid which resulted in the death of a party member, and left a number of other people injured following the FBI shot 100 rounds in Hampton’s house. Even if you know the way the tale ends however, it doesn’t mean that the retaliation and betrayal from the authorities any less awry.
