The Pomodoro Technique is a time management technique that is based on 25-minute periods of concentrated work, broken up by five-minute breaks. The longer breaks, usually 15-30 minutes, are scheduled after four work intervals. Every work period is known as a “pomodoro” which is the Italian word meaning tomatoes (plural: pomodori).

Entrepreneur and developer Francesco Cirillo created the Pomodoro Technique in the mid-80s, when it was his first year at the university and employed a kitchen timer to plan his studying schedule. He initially experimented with various work times beginning with two minutes, then increasing the time to an hour. He quickly realized that the intervals were getting too long for him to focus on a particular task. He settled on a 25-minute pomodori as the best timing for his needs.

After this incident, Cirillo recognized that time could be transformed into an ally instead of being a cause of stress. This technique, known as the Pomodoro Technique essentially trains people to be more focused on their work by limiting the amount of the time they try to keep the focus and providing restorative breaks from the work. This method can also help them overcome the tendency to delay as well as multitask and multitask, both of which can be detrimental to efficiency.
